My Story

Welcome to my personal website! My name is Hamza Mbareche, and I am a research scientist who is currently transitioning from academia to industry. My goal is to bridge the gap between the two and share my insights on research in both sectors.

I have always been passionate about research and its potential to make a positive impact on society. I earned my PhD from Université Laval where I focused on infectious and non-infectious disease transmission. During my time there, I had the opportunity to work on several exciting projects and collaborate with some brilliant minds in the field.

After completing my degree, I joined Sunnybrook Research Institute and Mount Sinai Hospital as a postdoctoral fellow. This was an amazing opportunity for me to continue pursuing my research interests and to learn from some of the best in the field. During my time there, I worked on viral transmission and pathogenesis and the microbiome’s role in Crohn’s Disease onset, which allowed me to gain valuable experience in high-throughput sequencing, genomics, bioinformatics, project management, supervision, and mentoring.

While I thoroughly enjoyed my time in academia, I also recognized that there were limitations to what I could achieve in that setting. I wanted to explore new avenues and apply my research skills to real-world problems.

That is why I am today focused on transitioning from academia to industry. By making this move, I am pursuing a range of goals:

Desire for Practical Impact

Many academics feel frustrated that their research doesn’t have a direct impact on the world around them. Moving to industry can provide an opportunity to work on projects that have tangible, real-world applications.

Career Growth Opportunities

Industry positions often offer more opportunities for career advancement, higher salaries, and greater job security than academia.

Access to Resources

Industry roles can provide access to resources and technologies that may not be available in academia, such as state-of-the-art equipment, funding, and industry networks.

Personal

Desire for a better work-life balance, a need for a change in environment, and a desire to pursue new challenges.

A Desire for Collaboration

I’m passionate about creating opportunities for academics and industry professionals to collaborate on projects, and believe that these collaborations could lead to breakthroughs that wouldn’t be possible otherwise.

Fostering Innovation

By creating closer ties between academia and industry, it will lead to more innovation and technological advancements.

Overall, bridging the gap between academia and industry can benefit both sides and create new opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and impact.
